Frost Warding – Using fire and frost wards, you'll often gain some extra mana to spend on fishing for procs or to extend your bar in the event something went wrong, like screwing up an evocation. Learn not to rely on frost warding to hand you free mana, but be ready to react if you're lucky.

Cycles - Just like you can lengthen your rotation by fishing for MB, you can shorten it to conserve mana. To get a good idea of how much mana you're spending per second on average, look at the cost of each stack of AB. Depending on your talents, these values may be slightly different for you:

* 0 stack: 215
* 1 stack: 591
* 2 stack: 967
* 3 stack: 1343
* 4 stack: 1720

Gems and Socket Bonuses

A couple of notes about gems:
» do not gem for intellect. If I see you gemmed for intellect, I will punch you.
» do not gem for MP5. If I see you gemmed for MP5, I will punch you TWICE.
» I’d only put epic-quality gems in T9/TOC/ICC5 gear or better, but it’s your gold.

A couple of notes about socket bonuses:
» if the socket is red, go ahead and put a Runed Cardinal/Scarlet Ruby in there. Even if the socket bonus is intellect (as it is on the mage T7 gloves, for example). Runed Rubies are, generally speaking, the best gems for mages, and so it makes sense to put them in red sockets when they’re available.
» if the socket is yellow or blue and gives MP5 or intellect, DO NOT gem for the socket bonus. The bonus does not help you, and giving up spell power to get MP5 is a definite DPS loss.
» if the socket is blue and you have a meta gem in your helm and the socket bonus gives spell power, plop a Purified Dreadstone/Twilight Opal in there – though you may only want to do that twice. You need two blue gems to unlock your meta, so you should use them in spots that give you spell power. However, some of the gear in Ulduar and beyond with blue sockets have such great socket bonuses that using more than two purple gems may be a DPS increase (e.g., +7 or +9 spellpower).
» if the socket is yellow and gives hit, haste, or crit: it might be worth it to use one of the orange gems. You’ll have to look at your overall gear, your hit rating, etc. Just don’t immediately discount it.
» If you need to gem to reach hit cap, how you do so is dependent on whether you’re using rare or epic quality gems. For rare, is better to use one Rigid Autumn’s Glow and one Runed Ruby to get the 16 hit than two of the Veiled Monarch Topazes (19 spell power, 16 hit versus 18 spell power, 16 hit). The opposite is true for epic quality gems, where using two oranges will gain you more spell power than a red and a yellow.
» You can put any color of gem in an eternal belt buckle – it does not affect the socket bonus on the belt.
» Given a certain level of spellpower and depending on your spec, your stat priority may change. Rawr will give you the best indicator of what gems are best for you.

Red:
Runed Dragon’s Eye – +39 spell power, jewelcrafting only, limit of three.
Runed Cardinal Ruby – +23 spell power
Runed Stormjewel – +23 spell power, unique-equipped
Runed Scarlet Ruby – +19 spell power

Orange:
Potent Ametrine – +12 spell power, +10 critical strike rating
Potent Monarch Topaz – +9 spell power, +8 critical strike rating
Reckless Ametrine – +12 spell power, +10 haste
Reckless Monarch Topaz – +9 spell power, +8 haste rating
Veiled Ametrine – +12 spell power, +10 hit
Veiled Monarch Topaz – +9 spell power, +8 hit rating

Yellow:
Rigid King’s Amber – +20 hit rating
Rigid Autumn’s Glow – +16 hit rating

Green:
Not recommended.

Blue:
Not recommended.

Purple:
Purified Dreadstone – +12 spell power, + 10 spirit
Purified Twilight Opal – +9 spell power, +8 spirit. Use these to unlock your meta.

Meta:
Chaotic Skyflare Diamond – +21 critical strike rating and 3% Increased Critical Damage
Ember Skyflare Diamond is not recommended. It’s just really crappy, people.
